Microphone Test on iPad

Test the microphone on any iPad model, including the array that moves between landscape and portrait.

The short answer

iPads mount their microphone differently depending on model and orientation, so a hand or a case flap over the array can drop the level by 20 dB without any fault in the device.

Microphone Test on iPad: step by step

  1. Open the test in Safari

Press Start test and allow microphone access. If the prompt never appears, check Settings, Safari, Microphone.

  2. Hold the iPad as you normally would

Speak toward the camera. iPad microphone placement varies by model — beside the front camera, along the top edge, or near the rear camera.

  3. Check your hands and the case

A palm across the top edge or a folded keyboard cover can cut the level dramatically. Try the test with the case removed.

  4. Rotate and repeat

Some iPads change which microphone is primary depending on orientation. Test both landscape and portrait if one feels quieter.

  5. Cross-check with Voice Memos

A clear Voice Memos recording with a poor browser result points to a Safari permission rather than hardware.

  • Audio going to the wrong placeA connected Bluetooth device may be capturing input. Disconnect everything in Settings, Bluetooth and retest.
  • Quiet since iPadOS updatedRestart first, then check whether Voice Isolation is enabled in Control Centre during a call.
  • Muffled audioDebris in the microphone slot, or a case that covers it. Clean with a dry soft brush and test again without the case.

Tablet microphones and how you hold them

An iPad is held in more positions than a phone or a laptop, and each position changes the acoustic picture. Propped on a keyboard case, the microphone points at the ceiling; held in landscape, a palm may cover it entirely.

Before assuming a fault, run the same test twice in two different holds. A 15 dB difference between them is normal and tells you more about ergonomics than about hardware.

Questions people ask

Does Stage Manager or Split View affect the mic?

No, but the app in focus may claim the input. Close other apps that use audio if capture behaves oddly.

Where is the microphone on an iPad?

Usually beside the front camera on newer models, and on the top edge on older ones. Pro models add microphones near the rear camera.

Why does my iPad sound quieter than my iPhone?

The microphone is further from your mouth and the tablet is often held at arm's length. Distance dominates everything else.

Can I use an external mic with an iPad?

Yes. USB-C and Lightning microphones work, as do USB interfaces through an adapter. They appear in the device list above.
