Windows 11Windows 11 Microphone Test
Test your microphone on Windows 11 in the browser, then cross-check it in Sound settings if you need a second opinion.
A Windows 11 microphone test should confirm four things: device present, app permission granted, level healthy, and audio recognisable on playback. The console above covers all four.
Windows 11 Microphone Test — how to do it
- Use the browser test first
Press Start test above and speak. This uses the same audio path Windows 11 gives to Teams, Zoom and Discord, so a pass here means the system side is healthy.
- Open Settings, System, Sound
Under Input, select your microphone. Windows 11 shows a live volume bar and a Start test button that reports a percentage after you speak.
- Check the input volume
Click the device name to open its properties. Input volume should be around 75 to 100 for most microphones. At zero, the meter never moves.
- Confirm system-wide permission
Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone. The master toggle must be on, and Let apps access your microphone must be on beneath it.
- Confirm per-app permission
On the same page, scroll to the list of apps. Windows 11 blocks each app individually, so Teams can work while Chrome is silent.
- Record in Voice Recorder
The built-in Voice Recorder app captures a clip you can play back — the final proof that the whole chain works.
Windows 11 microphone problems
- Bluetooth headset mic sounds terribleThat is the hands-free profile. Quality is limited by the protocol, not by Windows 11. A USB dongle or wired headset avoids it.
- No sound in any appCheck Privacy and security, Microphone. A single master toggle silences every application on the machine and gives no warning when it is off.
- Wrong device keeps being selectedWindows 11 switches to newly connected devices automatically. Set your preferred input in Sound settings, and unplug unused webcams.
- Microphone volume drops on its ownAn app has communications ducking enabled. Open Sound Control Panel, Communications tab, and set Do nothing.
- Enhancements cause distortionIn the device properties, turn off Audio enhancements. Vendor effects sometimes gate the start of every sentence.
The Windows 11 settings that quietly break microphones
Three settings account for most Windows 11 microphone complaints. Exclusive mode lets the first application to claim the device lock every other application out. Communications ducking lowers all other audio the moment Windows thinks a call started. Audio enhancements apply vendor effects that can gate the beginning of every sentence.
All three live in the legacy Sound Control Panel rather than the modern Settings app, which is why so many troubleshooting guides never mention them. Turning off exclusive control, setting communications activity to Do nothing, and disabling enhancements resolves a large share of cases that otherwise look like hardware failure.
Common questions
How do I stop Windows 11 lowering my mic level?
Disable Allow applications to take exclusive control in the device's Advanced properties, and set communications activity to Do nothing.
My mic works but sounds robotic
Turn off noise suppression and auto gain in the console above and test again. Aggressive processing causes exactly that artefact.
Where is the microphone test in Windows 11?
Settings, System, Sound, then select your input device under Input. The Start test button appears in the device's own page.
Why does Windows 11 report a percentage instead of decibels?
The built-in test is deliberately simple. For peak level, noise floor and clipping you need a meter like the one above.
